Ylang Ylang (Flower of Flowers) is a very hard tree that normally grows wild and is completely resistant to pest and disease and requires no artificial pesticides or fertilizers. It is related to the Cananga oil, which grows in Indonesia. It takes the flowers of fifteen trees to produce one kilo of oil.
The tree produces beautiful orchid like, fragrant yellow flowers. These flowers are harvested and hydro- distilled (the oil is separated during distillation), similar to how olive oil is graded. The first fraction is the finest, most fragrant part known as the extra. Then afterwards the grades go downward, III II and I. The oil is a yellow, clear liquid, with a lovely, heady, floral scent. Its rich aromas are almost a perfume in its own right, and may be worn as one (10 ml.).
